MYND Studio Founder Miya Hamalala Receives AGDA Student Merit Award for SixStar

Miya Hamalala, founder of MYND Studio, has received a Merit award in the Student category at the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) Design Awards for SixStar, a self-directed design project developed during her studies at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

SixStar is a web-based personality quiz built to help emerging creative practitioners better understand their own design tendencies. Rather than sorting users into a single fixed label, the test places them along a spectrum across six core traits, generating a unique constellation that visually represents their creative identity. With 729 possible combinations, no two results look quite the same.

The project was developed in direct response to the limitations Hamalala identified in existing personality assessment tools, many of which reduce complex creative identity down to one rigid archetype. Through research into popular personality frameworks, conversations with peers about their own doubts and needs, and early testing focused on clarity and accessibility, one theme came through consistently: people want to feel seen without being boxed in.

To bring that idea to life, Hamalala developed a custom generative art system that translates each user's qualitative quiz answers into a constellation, turning an abstract personality result into something visual, specific, and personal.

"SixStar started from a pretty simple frustration with how flattening most personality tests can be, especially for creatives still figuring out their own working style," said Hamalala. "I wanted to build something that gave people a starting point for reflection, not a label to live up to. Seeing it recognised by AGDA means a lot, especially knowing it started as a self-directed project I built because I genuinely wanted it to exist."

SixStar is live now at www.mysixstar.com, where users can take the test and generate their own constellation.

AGDA Design Awards recognise excellence in design across Australia each year, with Merit being one of three award tiers alongside Distinction and Pinnacle. The Student category celebrates emerging talent from design students across the country.

Hamalala now runs MYND Studio, offering brand identity, web design, and graphic design services for businesses and founders.
